The Report Card is about a precocious nine-year-old boy with a habitual set of disappointing grades always short of his mother’s expectations.

The San Luis School for Boys is private, located in a working class district of pre-Castro’s Havana. The school caters to middle class families and two hundred and forty of its brightest boys. Alejandro Faust was one of them; an only child, with a rich imagination, a curiosity out of the ordinary and an interest in the arts seldom found among kids his age.

Among young Alejandro’s many other proclivities, he treasured his private time, his on and off desire for anonymity and his dislike for group gatherings. Unfortunately, every Friday afternoon, the school would gather in the building’s central courtyard to hear the principal read aloud the results of the academic week. Alejandro considered the practice humiliating, especially when the principal read his mediocre marks and disappointing ranking among his classmates.

If the reading of his grades in public was embarrassing, bordering on the traumatic for him, his biggest challenge was to convince mother his marks were much better and higher than the disappointing “C+” printed on his Report Card. It was always a matter of coming up in a hurry with another kind of creative story — different from the one last week — to convince Mima what she was reading wasn’t exactly what it appeared to be.
